Perth International Arts Festival - Explore New Cultures

LABJACD

One of my favourite parts of the festival has always been the eclectic mix of sounds that the Becks Verandah bar produced.

It’s back but this year has a new home on the Esplanade in a big top. It will have to pull out all the stops to impress me as I rated the verandah bar, at the concert hall, the best temporary bar in Perth.

Here’s the Becks Music Box’s line up, starting Feb 9th.

Summerdayze - dancing in the sun

An eclectic mix of international and oz acts energized the stages of Summerdayze on Sunday overlooking Perth’s foreshore. The blistering day didn’t deter the die-hard dance set who varied in style from the summer cool to the quirky same-dressed clones. The festival felt half full as many had chosen to make a weekend of ‘Southbound’. This meant the devoted Perth dance crowd was in attendance and went hard to stir up the dirt. Not ready to take on the DJ stages I opted to start my day with Bliss N Esso. This energized hip hop three piece worked in unison to sing ‘n’ sample a tight set from ‘Bullet And A Target’, ‘Blazin’ and ‘Then til Now’. ‘DJ Izm’ went out with a strong message to their fans regarding racial tension in Australia. In 3 words he made the crowd chant ‘peace, love and unity’.I then headed over to the dance stages and mixed it up with some fluro wearing punters whilst listening to Chromeo, Sister Bliss and Felix Da Housecat.Kid Confucius had the arduous task of announcing to the De La Soul waiting crowd they were running late and stepped in an hour early for their set.Kid ConfuciusAll photographs by Liz Looker © This funky head band wearing 8 piece come from diverse backgrounds and influences. A heavy guitar presents, strong drums mixed with trombone and sax left an uplifting hip hop and old school soul sound that resonated through the crowd. Cut Copy was a band I expected to excite me and they didn’t disappoint. A Melbourne based band with great hair, eclectic synth samples and sounds lit up the ‘Live’ stage. Cut Copy’s influences are vast and date as far back to the ELO/Fleetwood Mac era of the 70’s. The disco and post punk from the 80’s to an indie sound heard in the early 90’s.‘Heart on Fire’, ‘Saturdays’ to ‘A dream’ set the crowd ablaze. Expect to see their new album out in Feb.   Cut CopyBefore De La Soul even got on stage a new generation of fans, who were just being born when they released their first record, were chanting their name in anticipation. The audience beefed up and out as they waited to see these legions of hip hop take to the stage. Finally, as the sun was setting the crowd erupted and took it up a notch when 3 guys from Long Island, New York took to the stage. In a high energy performance memorable moments included ‘Rollerskating Jam Named Saturday’ to ‘Ring Ring Ring (Ha Ha Hey)’. Although their set was a significant music experience for me you couldn’t help but notice their disapointment in the stage they performed on, sound and slot.Del La Soul The New Young Pony Club energised front woman Tahita Bulmer had the crowd by the third song shifted up a gear and kept them there for the rest of the performance. The New Young Pony ClubOther performances I heard were stella included Cosmic Gate, Felix Da Housecat, Chromeo and closer DJ David Guetta.THE CROWD   On the whole Summerdayze is a must see experience for music fans of various dance sound genres.Jenn HillerPhotographed by © Liz Looker.
