Margaret River Region - melting moments

Last weekend I spent a few days in the Yallinyup and Margaret River region. I hadn’t been down south for several months so I was looking forward to visiting my favourite haunts and discovering what’s new.

 Margaret River Providore

In between drives through tree lined, windy roads we visited the Margaret River Providore. In just over a year this delicious discovery in the bush has become one of the best places for food lovers, as it grows and produces a variety of gourmet eat-treats to take away or enjoy in their café.

Olive trees harvest full flavoured olives and olive oils. There is a grocery section that stocks quality products they have made fresh using produce from either their garden or brought in locally. Go for a long lunch at the open style café with a bottle of their wine.

The Margaret River Providore is truly a unique and refreshing place to visit whilst in the region.

GUNYULGUP GALLERIES

A favourite gallery of mine down there is Gunyulgup Galleries. This space represents some of the best artist, crafts people and designers Western Australian has to offer. With a beautiful lake as the backdrop experience great paintings, prints, sculpture, ceramics, glass, jewellery, furniture and books. Then go across to Lamonts for a coffee or a meal.

This Waldemar M Kolbusz ‘Trouper’ painting caught my eye as well as this Annette Blair white bowl.

milc. boutique

milc. has been trading in Dunsbourough for around 4 years and at one stage I felt was the best place to shop in West Australia as it houses such a well considered selection of beautiful things, and this is exactly what Nicole Cartledge philosophy is when buying.

It doesn’t only store some of the best Australia’s designers like Elisa Coleman, Nicola Finetti, Zimmermann, Ginger & Smart, Kirralee Johnson to Fleur Wood you can experience accessories from Zenska Jewellery, classic coffee table books, body products to small gifts and homewares.

Find milc. at shop 1, Dunsborough village shopping centre, Naturaliste tce, Dunsborough. Tel: 9759 1186.

HILLTOP STUDIOS

Finally where to stay? The region has a large selection of accommodation so whether it’s a beach retreat or an inner forest experience you can find it at www.margaretriver.com.

This time I chose to stay at Hilltop Studios, a self contained apartment overlooking a magnificent valley. These studios are aimed at couple. They are stylishly designed and finished with attention to detail. Close to the beach and Margaret River relax on your balcony with a book, go for a walk or explore the region.

Go to http://www.hilltopstudios.com.au for more details.

SAVE SMITH’S BEACH

Smiths Beach. A scenic rural beach with a small node of accomodation for about 500 people.

Smiths Beach will be changed irretrievably by this excessive development plan.

Please click through and lodge your objection to this property development which has been headed in the past by the fat cat Burke and Grills.

Having just spent a few days down south this precious coastline is so important to save for generations to come.

The Good Store - A great find

My first memory of Marshall Martin, the owner of the Good Store, was stepping into his store and noticing a man with a beaming smile inviting me over to his counter. He had just opened a box that contained a toy designed for 5 years and up. He made me laugh as he tested it out. There was such passion behind this man, his new toy and for the store. When you spend time in his store you understand why.

Stewart/Stand sterling silver wallet $100.

Marshall describes the store as a place to find ‘useful presents’. I would say it’s a place to find well designed, smart presents that are ideal for all age groups and a variety of uses.

What I saw and loved this week included a Stewart/Stand sterling silver wallet. This incredibly good looking wallet is woven using industrial materials and feels like leather.

Royal VJB’s garlic roller $35.

The Dutch designed Royal VKB’s garlic crusher looks gorgeous and matched in functionality at the same time. It’s has an anti-smelling device so your can get close to the garlic without the smell lingering for hours after.

Clocky pic Clocky $100.

The other product coming to the store soon is Clocky. It is such a novel idea it deserves a mention as it’s an alarm clock that only gives you one chance to wake up, after pressing snooze. It then jumps off your side table rolls around and hides. It keeps ringing until you get up to find him and switch him off. I am sure he works for your boss.

This store is refreshing to visit and I highly recommend it for any present idea or to spoil yourself.

Wizard bowl $67.

The Good Store is in Victoria Park, a buzzing area that has lifted it game over the past few years. There is a cool pub, great reasonably priced restaurants and cafes with other good interior shops along the strip.

MY DIARY

I have been frantic over the last week and so mystylelocal.net has suffered slightly in this process and I apologise for this. The job of freelancing can be 24/7 at times and this week is one of them. I forgot the pressures of running two departments on a TVC.

In between this pressure I had a very exciting call from a businessman who has commissioned me to source art and glass for his new launch. Stepping on board his launch was pure luxury and the fabulous part is it was hand-crafted in WA. Now I have the chance to furnish it with special WA and Australian pieces, what an incredible opportunity! Special thanks to my dear friend Jennie Fitzhardinge for the contact.

If you know or are a glass designer please send through some of your work so I can consider it - jennhiller@westnet.com.au .

I did have a moment to race down to Fremantle and savor on some special pieces I saw in Off the Wall, Mini Morri and remedy for you.

Off the Wall is a special vintage shop on South Terrace. It’s home to funky funiture and vintage clothes.

Products at Off the Wall, South Tce, Fremantleremedy takes pride in sourcing ‘beautiful things’ that are designed by creative minded people.

Product from remedy, High St, Fremantle

Minni Morri is a place for kids with taste. You can find designer clothes and toys from local and international designers.
