Perth Fashion Festival - The Highs & New Ideas

Aurellio Costarella Showstopper Aurello Costarella

The event that was truly ‘the’ special moment over Perth’s Fashion Festival was the WA Designer Collections, because as the title said it was about our WA designers and stylishly executed.

Industry heavyweights were there to celebrate WA fashion. This year the event took a new approach and was backed by the Department of Culture and the Arts and project managed by Event Gallery. I felt I was at Rosemount’s Fashion Week not at the Convention Centre Perth.

The event was shown in two parts with new designers taking the catwalk first.

Kooey International Swimwear - From Broome to Beyond

Kooey International Swimwear

Local swimwear label Kooey International was launched in Broome by local Aboriginal Joanne Pellew in desperation as her daughter wouldn’t wear anything else.

This story is incredibly inspiring as Pellew has only been in business for two years and is proud to be the first Aboriginal swimwear designer.

The 800 strong crowd played witness to Kooey International spring summer collections on Sunday night. The collection saw a beautiful selection of original Indigenous art printed for the designs.

AUTO CLASSIC MINI MODEL OF THE YEAR - Where Dreams Start

The Auto Classic MINI Model of the Year Awards is a showcase of Perth girls who have already been discovered by agency bookers at funky boutiques, on the street or at modeling competitions.

Skye Strake, photographed by Nicole Bentley

These girls have already done their first nervous photo shoot with a fashion stylist, make up artist and photographer. The creative team helps transform her into a sophisticated goddess. Now she’s skipping school to go to castings and jobs with the dream of walking the catwalks of Europe and getting that big advertising campaign in New York. With Perth’s history of talent this dream is possible.

Previous winners of this celebrated award include Gemma Ward, Emma Booth and Nicole Trunfio. Their stories are fairytales and these girls are currently living the dream of modeling and acting in the fiercely competitive international market.

Last night celebrated a select few of the young stars with two special awards up for grabs, Hot New Talent of the Year and Model of the Year.

From the moment I saw the first model I was incredibly disappointed. Each girl came out one by one with the same strong, domineering hair style that over shone her beauty. The look was edgy and perfect for a catwalk production, but not this one. I wanted to see each girl and their attributes close up which included their hair. The fringe overtook their eyes and the look didn’t allow them to express their individual look.

The styling was sensational. The very now space age look invaded the runway. Gold resonated from the stage in the form of leggings and ever glowing Ruth Tarvydas evening wear. Other top designers featured on the night in an eclectic layered mix of shimmer were Bowie, Ericaamerica, Marc Jacobs and Stella by Stella McCartney. Taking the futuristic theme for the night was a perfect fit, as the winners future is looking silver and gold.

The finalist for Hot New Talent included Scene models Greta Chesterman and Kirstie Fiander, Vivien’s models Anna Davoll, Bridget Malcolm, Pippa Hood, Skye Strake and Yasmine Straub. The gorgeous Skye Strake, who was found a few years back at Vivien’s Perth Model Search, won the prize.

Finalists for Model of the Year include Chadwick’s model Pip Bingham, Scene models Bridget Harries and Cynde Williams and Vivien’s models Allegra Carpenter and Shanay Hall.

The outstanding Shanay Hall took out the top prize. Hall has shot to great heights in her short career, some highlights so far include Just Jeans TVC, Vogue 4 times, shot by Justin Smith, Richard Bailey and Max Doyle, Marie Claire 2 times, the cover of Russh Mag 2 times plus several editorials for them, Follow Magazine, Harpers Bazaar summer and winter editorials and Sportsgirl.

Good Luck to Shanay, Skye and the other girls. May your future be what you want it to be. Keep local as we keep a close eye @ www.mystylelocal.net on news of the girls.

Ferngrove Wines WA Designer Showcase

I didn’t know what to expect when I turned up to this years Ferngrove wines WA designer showcase on Monday night. Not having established myself as a stylist in the fashion scene after being away for over 6 years, I had no idea what shape the industry was in. So this parade was a chance for me to either celebrate or face my fears.

 1. 2. 3.

The showcase consisted of two collections from ten emerging and six established WA designers. The parade began with the established set of independent designers. Katou launched her show with soft printed dress that tied around the waist. Designing for women who know what they like Katou is retro fused with modern sensibility. Playing with print, lace inserts and poking fun at pop art Katou’s range was full of strong design moments.

 4. 5.

Lin Pin had her girls walk down the catwalk in sophisticated, classic styles and progressed to fun summer prints. Playing with fashions current obsession with metallics Batchelor included back-to-back dresses that followed this look. A divine black dress which played on the Grecian shape took a modern draped twist then fell to the ankles.

 6.  7.

Zanthus, also a strong new talent, got political with bold environmental messages that demanded you to think and act. Zanthus also produced a cocktail series with metallic detailing. Other prominent design aspects included a black and white series, baby doll lines and high waist pants that were very now and very delicious.

 8.

Vying for WA Fashion Designer of the Year Morrison’s minimal French-influenced collection saw slouchy pants and relaxed loose dresses that are perfect for a lazy Perth summer. Discerning draped details made up the best moments in United Constructions show. Attention to detail in large slouchy pockets, layered skirts and pinched pants worked in mainly monochrome colours of black and white. 9.The New Generation Designers then followed with ‘hit’ pieces and ‘seen it before’ pieces. These 10 designers were trying to impress the judges with their collection which will see the winner present their range at the next L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival.Anan showed a selection of printed black and white dresses that secured the key monochrome style for spring/summer. Cowl necklines and cheeky pants made up the second half of the collection. I felt this label had promise and look forward to seeing it develop.

 10.   11.

Soft fabrics and strong sleeved detail made up the Miyoko collection. The Aladdin pants in electric blue were a strong statement. Another high waist notable moment was Bim Kenesis beautiful pant in grey. The only piece that interested me in Formally Knownas collection was the black jacket that had inserts of colours grey and white. This jacket could evolve into a strong style for the label as it develops.

C/H worked with a range based on non-coloured neutrals of white and grey. Good-looking, quality fabrics were designed with gathers, pleats and tuck details and won the designer the opportunity to go east for the next L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion festival. Congratulations and we look forward to hearing how you go.

12.13.

Stand International’s distinct denim series made an impression on me. The cut and excellent stitched finishing featured studs and distressed fabrication.

14. 15.16.

I loved Gospel’s looped necklace which was added to most of her collection and stole show for this range.

Some of the ranges suffered due to problems sourcing good fabrics, and inexperience for some in cutting and finishing techniques. Having said that on the whole our designers are working hard to improve their skills and we should support them by shopping at retailers like Merge, Subway DC, Department, retailers down William St, Northbridge, Billie & Rose,  Eros and Lucky Stripe.

Wheels & Dollbaby - Celebrate 21 Years

Wheels & Dollbaby marked their 21st year in business with an unforgettable performance-parade on Saturday night.

The crowd filled with friends and supporters of the label were glamorous and energized as the lights dimmed.

To launch the parade rock star Mark McEntee and partner of designer Melanie Greensmith played guitar as model/singer Tiah Eckhardt sung Je T’aime.

Bows dominated the first half of the show as models flaunted and flirted to the cameras. Beautiful scallop necklines, hand-beaded Swarovski crystals and figure-hugging silhouettes revealed every curve.

The crowd was dazzled and delighted as oohs, screams and whistles bellowed from the back.

Red lips and long loose curls complimented black velvet, textured tights and revealing legs.

The piece designed to make a woman feel divine came half way through the show when a pair of gorgeous gathered pink pants overshadowed the stage.

Day turned into night with sheer blouses, blazing black velvet dresses with floral appliqués and stunning embroidery.

A stellar performance to celebrate what has been a long and outstanding design career.

Material Boy - New Age Boy

Late Friday night the current title holder of WA Designer of the Year, Material Boy presented his Spring Summer collection.

The show titled “Celebration of your inner gay” won over a new set of fans as a more wearable collection was presented. Material Boys signature graphic prints were replaced with solid blocks of strong colour from electric blue, to hot pink and lime green.

A balloon printed t-shirt, blue detailed short, long socks and colour coordinated sneakers commenced the show. We soon saw a softly draped jacket and hot, hot pink ¾ length pants. The tail end of the show saw a strong emphasis on denim.

Design directions included large pockets, platted scarves, colour coordinated sneakers in shades of metallic, electric blue to white. Cut away t-shirts, patterned trimming, figure hugging shorts and long crutched jeans

A memorable moment for the girls was a bulging crutch short worn with a crisp white shirt and print detailing. The pant should have been called ‘what it feels like for a boy’ short.

Since Material Boys conception in 2003 the label has influenced a new movement in how boys dress for the street. The result, an injection of colour, prints and eccentric designs that has made an androgynous declaration. The label is an important outlet for men to express themselves in a generally conservative design age.

VIP Launch Party - The Ticket In Town

The best ticket in town last night was the Perth Fashion Festival’s VIP launch.

On arrival the foyer was filled with bling and blondes. Upstairs the town hall was transformed into an international style runway with politicians and VIP industry members lining its sides

In a festival coup La Perla, the precious Italian brand, chose to show their Australian-exclusive Spring/Summer collection of Ready-to-Wear, Swimwear and Lingerie in association with this VIP night.

To accompany La Perla’s sensual designs Chimere Pearls, a new WA jewellery company, presented one off pieces that glistened and shimmered on stage.

Orlan, French biological artist

Before heading to the town hall last night I couldn’t miss the opening of French biological artist Orlan’s exhibition at the Homes `a Court Gallery in East Perth.

Orlan has been in Perth for the last 3 months in association with the Biennale of Electronic Arts Perth or BEAP, SymbioticA and The University of Western Australia.

Orlan says there is ‘a good energy and creativity here in Perth’ and has met many new friends during her residency. Whilst being here she has worked towards developing a harlequin coat made from human and animal skin cells.

This exhibition, ‘The Skin and Stone - Self-hybridization, Pre-Columbian Series’, explores the different standards of beauty through various ages and civilizations. Starting with original Pre-Columbian images Orlan manipulates these with images of herself that have been digitally re-mastered.

As a result, each piece has a unique abstract quality that’s challenges perceptions of beauty and reality.

Orlan’s exhibition runs until November 4. For more information go to www.holmesacourtgallery.com.au .

The 3rd BEAP festival (Biennale of Electronic Arts Perth) is currently running until September 23 for more information go to www.beap.org.

King Street Media Launch - The Start Of Things To Come

Last night saw King Street transformed into a striking, street catwalk for the 2007 Perth Fashion Festival Media launch.

On a stormy night the crowd,  consisting of St George Tce suits to fashion industry heavyweights, were privy to some of the highlights set to transpire over the next 10 days.

With electric pink lighting and matching catwalk the show commenced with the 5 finalists who are vying for the prestigious 2007 WA Fashion Design Award.

Morrison

Beautiful Joveeda cream cotton dresses surged down the runway, with a design emphasis on the waist.  One Fell Swoop worked with lace detailing on their silk evening dresses and a highlight from Morrison was a v neck, high waisted dress with a bow detail to the back. Su adapted their collection around a pink and grey check fabric. This was a hit with their long dress but a miss with their belted shirt. Ae’lkemi flirted with ruffles, pleats and feathers. Fernandez’s show stopper being a floor length black flouncing dress that floated as the model walked.

The winner of WA Designer of the Year will be announced on Thursday, September 20 and mystylelocal.net will reveal the winner the day after.

 Ae’lkemi

The STM Readers Choice Award showcased an assorted selection of strong and not so strong evening wear. STM readers get the chance to vote for the winner. My vote goes to foxworth effect for their luscious fabric, simple design and shimmering finish.

Our appetite for new-season fashion was satisfied when the King Street retailers presented their wares.

Key highlights included Varga Girl, who mixed iconic trends like a 50’s waisted belt, a 70’s style jumpsuit and finished with chunky jewellery similar to what you saw in the 80’s. I loved Tu’s untied tie scarf. It was an intelligent use of draping and design which produced a statement piece. Look out for cool new retailer family. A strong sporty meets street collection saw bold prints that worked harmoniously and finished with a relaxed sneaker.
